3 Home Remedies to Get Rid of Termites

by Anita Schmidt

Pests are a pain in the neck for any homeowner as they can spread diseases. Termites are some of the pests that can cause damage to your wooden furniture and fixtures. High moisture content in your home is also another reason why there are termites in your home. Termites can damage your wood furniture, but it can take a long time to notice signs of termites. This is why you should act immediately if you see even one termite anywhere in your home.  Here are some of the remedies that you can use to get rid of termites.

Orange Oil

Orange oil that is produced from orange peels contains a substance that acts as an insecticide. The substance, D-limonene, will effectively get rid of the termites. D-limonene contains a high content of citric acid which will dehydrate the termites, causing their deaths. Orange oil does not produce harmful emissions, so you do not have to worry about the oil causing harm to your children and pets. Wear a glove and apply a generous amount of orange oil where you spotted the termites. If you notice that the infestation is serious, you can drill a hole on the wood or wall and pour orange oil in. Repeat the procedure after two days so you can entirely terminate the termites. To ensure that you do not go through another infestation, you can reapply the oil after a few months.

Cardboard Trap

Termites love eating cellulose, which is in cardboard and wood. Therefore, you can set a trap for the termites using wet cardboard. This will attract the termites to your cardboard and away from your wood fixture. Stack a few pieces of cardboard together with tape. Using a spray bottle, pour water onto the cardboard until it is completely saturated. Place the trap near the affected area for a few days. Check the trap then and you will notice some termites on it. Take the trap outside and burn it to get rid of the termites. It is a simple procedure that people may ignore, but it is helpful.

Neem Oil

Neem oil has a strange smell, but it is not harmful. Neem oil is applied in the same way as orange oil, but it is more effective. Neem oil naturally regulates growth. This oil will prevent the termites from molting, a process required for them to progress to adulthood through many phases. This means termites will not lay eggs anymore, so the infestation will be short-lived. All you need to do is apply a generous amount of oil on the infested areas.
