The Pests That Are Bad News for Clothing Businesses

by Anita Schmidt

Pest control in a food-related business is an obvious necessity. Food naturally attracts all kinds of pests, and many of them will cause hygiene issues and other problems if left unchecked. But it's not just the food industry that needs to be on top of pest control measures.

If your business involves clothing, whether you're making it, storing it or selling it, keeping pests away is vital to your success. Neglecting it can result in a loss of stock that hits your profits hard, and pests can multiply so quickly that they become totally out of control before you're able to do anything about it. These are some of the creatures that can be particularly troublesome for clothing businesses.

Moths

Most moths are harmless, even if they can be a bit of a nuisance if one finds its way inside where there's a light source. There's one exception that spells trouble for clothing businesses, however: the aptly named clothes moth.

It's not actually the clothes moths themselves that cause the problems; it's their larvae. As soon as they hatch, they need to eat, and they'll munch holes in natural fabrics like wool and cotton if given the chance. They can even eat through leather.

Since they're small and difficult to see, professional pest control is by far the best way to protect your precious stock.

Rodents

Rats and mice will bite and tear at all kinds of fabrics, ripping bits away to use as nesting material. They'll easily get into any cardboard storage boxes, and they'll also bite through electrical cables and other equipment you might use.

It's important to not only deal with any rodents that have found their way in but to prevent future infestations permanently. A pest control company can help you achieve this goal.

Silverfish

Silverfish are small beetle-like creatures that prefer the dark, so you may not even know you have them until you have an inspection carried out by a pest expert.

They eat a staggering range of substances, but their favourite is anything starchy. Since starches are often used in clothing, silverfish will eat holes in clothes and leave nasty stains behind as they do so.

Spiders

Some spiders are dangerous, while many others are merely a source of fear for a lot of people. Either way, stored clothing provides them with a convenient hiding place, whether it's hanging up or stacked in boxes.

They might not be discovered until someone wears the clothing they're hiding in, so it's a good idea to keep them away from your stock altogether with the help of a pest controller.
