Top Factors Influencing Choice of Termite Treatment

by Anita Schmidt

Termite infestation is a significant threat to a property because of the destruction the pests are capable of. Therefore, if you see plenty of termite activity around or within your property, you must contact pest control services immediately. The service providers are professionals at pest control and treatment and ensure that your property is termite-free. Although termite control services have different treatment methods in their arsenal, they choose a specific technique for various reasons. This article highlights factors that determine the type of termite treatment service to use.

Proximity to Water Body

Termite control services understand the importance of keeping the environment safe. Termite treatment means going after the destructive pests in their nests situated deep in the ground. Therefore, the first thing reputable control services often do before beginning termite treatment is establish a property's proximity to a water body — under or above ground. If a property is near a water body, pest control services avoid using liquid termiticides because they affect the quality of water sources. The best treatment for such a property is termite baits. However, if a property is not located near a water body, then liquid termiticides suffice.

Location of Termite Colony

Many property owners are familiar with termite colonies located in the ground since they are the most common. However, some termites form their colonies above ground — aerial colonies. Notably, both colonies must be treated differently. For instance, liquid termiticides are best suited for killing in-ground termite colonies. However, pest control services cannot use the same treatment on aerial colonies, especially in windy conditions. Foam termiticides are excellent for aerial termite colonies. The foam's consistency allows an upward spread, ensuring that the chemical reach areas difficult to treat with liquid termiticides. Termite control services use the two treatment methods if both colony types are present on the same property.

The Extent of Infestation

Termite infestations vary in severity, which is critical when choosing the most effective treatment process. For instance, a mild termite infestation where control services only find the destructive pests in a few areas, such as an attic, the kitchen or the outdoors, can be addressed by liquid or foam termiticides and baiting. They are simple, straightforward treatment methods, which target a specific area. Conversely, pest control services prefer fumigation treatment in extensively infested buildings. In such cases, termites can be found in every crevice and crawl space in a room. Fumigation treatment involves tenting an entire termite-infested property and realising a fumigant, which is left for a period to kill termites exhaustively.
