Removing Rodents From Your Home Humanely

by Anita Schmidt

Rodents can cause significant damage to your home and garden by chewing through wires, gnawing woodwork, nesting in your walls or subfloor and contaminating your food cupboard. Traditionally, rodenticides and traps have been used to wipe out rodent populations in homes, but homeowners are increasingly looking for humane alternatives to these traditional methods. It's possible to have rodents removed from your property humanely, but it's worth bearing in mind that this approach can take longer, particularly when there are pups in nests within your property. The larger the population, the longer the removal process will be. When you call in a pest control company to remove rodents humanely, their approach will be two-pronged. Firstly, they will focus on removing rodents already in your home. Secondly, they will provide guidance on deterring rodents to prevent future infestations.

Removing Rodents Humanely

A pest control company will strategically place catch-and-release traps around your property, focusing on areas where there are clear signs of rodents. Bait is placed in these traps to entice the rodents, and they must be checked regularly to ensure any rodents captured are not held in the traps for long periods. Each trap holds a single rodent, but the traps can be reused. Each rodent that's caught in a trap will be checked before being released. If any are lactating females, the pest control company will do their best to locate the nest and move the pups to ensure they don't starve without their mother.

Deterring Rodents

As part of humane rodent removal is deterring re-entry to your property, the pest control company will assess your property to ascertain where the rodents gained entry. They will then make recommendations to deter rodents, which may include installing vent covers, sealing gaps around windows, doors and pipes and attaching draught excluders to doors. Recommendations for deterring rodents in your garden may include clearing vegetation and adding plants that can deter rodents, such as mint. Rodents are attracted to easy sources of food, so keeping your dried goods in rodent-proof containers can also make your home less attractive to them.

Signs of rodents in your home include gnaw marks on wood, a strong ammonia smell, droppings near food sources and hearing scratching noises. If you suspect you have a rodent problem, act quickly and call a local pest control company. Rodents are easier to clear from your home before they start building nests and breeding.
