5 Simple Pest Control Remedies to Keep Your Home Safe

by Anita Schmidt

Pests can quickly become a severe menace in your home by causing property damage and spreading infections. When they find their way on your property, you should immediately call a pest control specialist to remedy the situation. However, before taking this action, consider these simple pest control tips and remedies you can use to fend them off from your property.

Eliminate Any Standing Water

Pests, especially mosquitos, love stagnant water where they can breed and spread diseases like malaria. Therefore, ensure that you eliminate any stagnant water around your home. Ensure all drains coming from your house are cleaned and drain wastewater properly.

Consider Regular Garbage Disposal

Proper garbage disposal is essential in keeping pests out of your house, especially in the kitchen. Generally, consider daily garbage disposal from your kitchen every time it accumulates. Failure to do this regularly can attract rodents, rats and cockroaches inside your house. That might even get worse when rotten food particles are scattered around your home. Pest infestation is inevitable with inferior garbage disposal methods, and that can cause health risks such as diseases and infections.

Get Rid of Items You Don't Need

Another crucial pest control strategy is decluttering your home. For example, remove any scattered boxes, useless toys and containers that you no longer require. When they accumulate inside your house, such items are perfect hiding and breeding spots for pests. You can also choose to sell unwanted items such as shoes, plastic bags, and strollers, among others. If you find that some items will not have any meaningful value to you, then get rid of them.

Seal Any Cracks and Repair Damages

Cracks on your house make a perfect gateway for pests to easily find their way inside. Therefore, it would be wise to begin by sealing any external cracks on your walls, doors, windows, utility piping, fascia or siding using an appropriate caulk. Additionally, repair any cracked or damaged door and window seals. Also, remember to assess for damaged weather stripping, as well as loose mortar.

Proper Garden Maintenance

Finally, if you have a home garden with holes and pits, consider filling them thoroughly to prevent water accumulation. Additionally, if you own a water pond or fountain, make sure you clean it regularly. Any shrubs or plants that have overgrown should be pruned too. All that will help in maintaining and prevent pest infestation.
